Vision: We believe that youth who act with a sense of personal responsibility, interdependence and global awareness will lead productive lives and build strong communities. Mission: We teach personal growth through experience-based academic programs for youth of diverse backgrounds, with an emphasis on girls. TSEA’s rigorous programs enhance students’ self-reliance and teamwork capabilities.
Description:
The Tall Ship Education Academy is a small non profit organization based in San Francisco, CA. We offer life-changing alternative education programs for low income girls in the Bay Area. Our signature program is the Tall Ship Semester for Girls which began in 1999. Each spring semester, we enroll 15 girls from Bay Area high schools and provide a semester’s worth of academic credit that students earn as they work in classrooms here in San Francisco, act as crew of a traditionally rigged sailing vessel for six weeks and finally complete an internship in local organizations. This experience moves girls from an apathetic tolerance toward their education to motivated young women eager to pursue their dreams. In the summer of 2007, we will pilot a summer program based on the successful semester program.
