The motivation of The Salvation Army is love of God and a practical concern for the needs of humanity. This is expressed by a personal ministry, the purposes of which are to preach the Gospel, disseminate Christian truths, supply basic human necessities, provide personal counseling and undertake the spiritual and moral regeneration and physical rehabilitation of all persons in need who come within its sphere of influence regardless of race, color, creed, sex or age.
Description:
The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center (ARC) in San Francisco provides services to individuals suffering from the debilitating effects of substance abuse.
Our residential facilities (112 beds for men in the Mission and 24 beds for women at Pinehurst Lodge in the Sunset District) provide a social model environment in which individuals learn the tools to overcome their chemical dependency and lead productive, clean, and sober lives.
In our warehouse, beneficiaries of our program help in the processing of donated clothing, furniture, and household goods, which are then sold at our Thrift Stores. The proceeds from the stores fund all of the programs, professional counseling, and administration of our Center, as well as food, housing, medical care, etc. for 140+ beneficiaries.
History:
The ARC has operated in our present location,
1500 Valencia St, for approximately 60 years.
In the early days of our Center, most of the individuals were older alcoholic men. But more recently, we serve a much younger population (men and women)who have become addicted to various "street drugs" especially cocaine and methamphetimines.
We work closely with the court systems in several Bay Area Counties, and many of our beneficiaries come to us because they have been ordered to either do a program or go to jail. But even though they are "court-ordered," these men and women find new hope here at The Salvation Army. As a direct result of their participation in this spiritual program and the testimonies of others the beneficiaries realize how God is working in their lives, offering His grace, love, and forgiveness.
