Sonrisas’ mission is to provide accessible health care to the uninsured and underinsured communities of the Coastside region of San Mateo County. Sonrisas is focused on oral disease prevention, health care outreach, and prevention and care for childhood caries.
Description:
Sonrisas, which means "Smiles" in Spanish, is a dental and oral health education center. Our center is located along the Coastside area of San Mateo County which is a large agricultural region isolated from the rest of the county by coastal mountains. Since Sonrisas opened its doors, over 20,000 clinic visits have been provided to almost 3,500 low-income patients. Sonrisas is the only Coastside dental service that accepts patients with DentiCal, Healthy Families or Healthy Kids coverage, and provides service to many low-income children and adults who do not have any type of insurance.
History:
Sonrisas began as a mobile oral health van in 1996, focused on providing visual screenings to the community. After only a short period of operation, it had become clear to the founders of the visual screening van that the community was in serious need of affordable dental care.
