Our vision of the Excelsior:

The Excelsior Mission Street shopping district will be an inviting, inclusive urban village. Eclectic shops, specialty stores, services and restaurants along the attractive, tree-lined sidewalks of our Mission Street corridor will be well-served by public transportation and will provide for the daily needs of residents as well as attract visitors from around the city. Arts and cultural institutions will offer evening entertainment in our safe, friendly neighborhood. Diverse individuals, families, and merchants will proudly participate in building and sustaining a true sense of cooperation, care and community in the Excelsior. People who live here and those who visit will meet and mix to enjoy the Excelsior's spirit and unique character.

History:
In mid-2002, District 11 Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval held several town hall meetings at the Ocean Avenue Presbyterian Church regarding commercial revitalization on Mission Street in the Excelsior. From these initial meetings, the Local Initatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Mayor's Office of Economic Development began a six month assessment of opportunities and needs in the Excelsior.

Stakeholders in the community continued to meet bi-weekly at the Church in order to give input to LISC. From these meetings, it was clear that community members wanted to take charge and act. Thus, in October 2002, the Excelsior Action Group was formed.
