The Sacred Dying Foundation is dedicated to challenging the way our society experiences death and dying. The Foundation's primary goal is to return the sacred to the act of dying by serving those who are at the end-of-life. The Sacred Dying Foundation is also committed to changing the paradigm of how we approach death as a whole through educating the public on new models of death and dying for our society.
Description:
THE NEED FOR SACRED DYING: In Western society, many people have lost touch with the spiritual aspect of death and dying. Medicine and technology, while valiantly saving lives, treat death as a failure or an embarrassment. How can the dying reclaim grace and dignity for themselves? How do we refocus attention on the profound spiritual experience that is fundamental to the end-of-life process? These are the questions that the Sacred Dying Foundation is devoted to answering. The Sacred Dying Foundation is unique in its service to dying individuals and to families facing the death of a loved one. Our highest priority is to re-invest death and dying with respect, honor, and sacredness. Sacred Dying involves both the body and the soul in the greatest transition we are ever called upon to make. Sacred Dying is a proven approach to providing spiritual aid to the dying. Megory Anderson developed the Sacred Dying Philosophy through her experience helping hundreds of people through the transition from life to death. Megory has begun teaching others how to facilitate Sacred Dying, first through her book Sacred Dying: Creating Rituals for Embracing the End of Life, and now through the creation of the Sacred Dying Vigil Program.
History:
Megory Anderson founded the Sacred Dying Foundation in 1996. She is a theologian, educator, liturgist, and author of the books Sacred Dying: Creating Rituals for Embracing the End of Life and Attending the Dying. Megory has a rich personal history in religion and theology, formerly as an Anglican monastic in New York and then as a comparative religion scholar. She is well known internationally for her writings and extensive work in death and dying, especially at bedside vigil during the last hours. Megory is a vibrant presence as a speaker, celebrated for her ability to share her knowledge and skills: to connect with, educate, and train end-of-life caregivers and professionals from diverse medical, religious, and cultural backgrounds. Megory is an Adjunct and sometimes Professor at the University of San Francisco and University of California, Berkeley, and she serves on the Advisory Board of Spirituality & Health magazine. She is currently finishing her theological doctorate in Sacred Dying at Canterbury Christ Church, Canterbury, England.
