Volunteers For Outdoor California
Logo

Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) conducts and manages large-scale volunteer projects on public lands and parks, providing assistance to public land managers for a broad range of large-scale trail maintenance and construction, habitat restoration, and related land stewardship activities. V-O-Cal conducts weekend projects all over Northern California, offering volunteers a broad range of project opportunities.

Description:
Volunteers for Outdoor California believes that the quality of the volunteer experience is the most important part of any of its efforts. As a result, everything about the organization and our projects is designed to make sure that every volunteer has a great time and leaves with a genuine sense of accomplishment.

V-O-Cal conducts large-scale projects — involving 100-500 volunteers — in beautiful places. V-O-Cal provides the project planning and volunteer supervision for its partner agencies on its projects. A typical V-O-Cal project will have accumulated several hundred volunteer planning hours before the project weekend and provides the equipment, trained crew leaders, and quality control monitoring for the project itself, in accordance with the standards developed cooperatively with the partner agency. V-O-Cal projects are highly organized events, relying on volunteers throughout the process.

History:
Headquartered in Redwood City, CA, Volunteers for Outdoor California (V-O-Cal) was founded in 2006 to motivate and enable people to be active stewards of California’s public and protected lands. V-O-Cal is closely modeled on a 22-year old organization in Colorado, VOC. While there are many Bay area organizations that do some form of land stewardship, the V-O-Cal approach is a little different, and it is designed to complement the work of local Friends of... groups and extend the reach of other agencies. We offer volunteers a broad range of project types in a consistently well-organized fashion.
