| Last updated on September 17, 2007 |
Since 1988, the East Palo Alto Tennis & Tutoring program (EPATT) has been impacting the lives of hundreds of East Palo Alto youth. Through partnerships with families, schools, and the local communities, EPATT promotes leadership, discipline, hard work and excellence among the 100 K-12 students. Using the unique mix one-on-one academic tutoring and tennis instruction, EPATT strives to enrich the academic, athletic, and social skills of its participants.
Description:
The program is composed of seven main components:
- Tennis for all students as well as a fitness and nutrition component.
- Academic skill development for grades K-8th using a literacy curriculum designed by Caryl Hughan and an online software program called Write to Learn.
- One on one tutoring for all grades
- College counseling, SAT prep, and a study skills curriculum for 9th-12 graders(Guaranteed 4.0 Learning System).
- Life skills instruction for grades 7th-8th through the First Serve network. (See S.C.O.R.E. EPATT's own life skill curriculum)
- Parent education, assistance, and advocacy.(See Families for more info.)
- Enrichment activities that build a team atomosphere and foster student creativity.
History:
The East Palo Alto Tennis Program began in 1990 after two years of successful summer programs organized by Jeff Arons of the Youth Tennis Foundation, an organization that promotes tennis instruction for inner-city youth. After consultation with the superintendent of the Ravenswood City School District, Dr. Charlie Mae Knight, four tennis courts were built on the site of the Ravenswood Middle School (now the Cesar Chavez Academy). By the spring of 1991, the program fielded a team of twelve players to compete in the middle school league and in sanctioned tennis tournaments throughout the Bay Area. In 1992, the program implemented an academic tutorial where 21 team members received academic assistance in a one-on-one relationship with a volunteer academic tutor. The program grew tremendously. In 1995, EPATT was honored to be named by the Association of Tennis Professionals as one of the nation's top ten inner city tennis programs. In 1997 the program moved to Stanford University, and it now operates at the Taube Family Tennis Stadium. Today, approximately 100 children participate in both the tennis instruction and academic tutorial. In addition, more than 100 volunteers work with the program on a consistent basis.
