AIDS Project East Bay (APEB) is a community based organization, dedicated to preventing the spread of HIV and supporting individuals infected with the virus through programs targeted at some of the most vulnerable and marginalized individuals in Alameda County. APEB ensures that individuals and communities beyond the reach of other agencies receive professional services of the highest standard.

Description:
At APEB we assist those in East Bay who most need HIV-positive services, HIV prevention services, and (medical) primary care: communities of color, gay and bisexual men and other men who have sex with men (MSM), transgenders, youth, the indigent and the disenfranchised. We lend a helping hand and welcome all into the protection of our care. We accomplish this by creating innovative solutions and by offering services that are sensitive to, and respectful of, the populations that we serve.
APEB’s services and programs are culturally and linguistically appropriate to the populations we serve and include ambulatory care, medical case management, emergency financial assistance (utilities, rent, and transportation), food & clothing, and HIV prevention services that include workshops and support groups for both HIV positive and HIV negative individuals. APEB’s prevention programs reach over 1000 individuals annually through a variety of targeted outreach strategies and venues (i.e., health education & prevention workshops, support groups, local high school and college presentations, outreach at night clubs & bars, outreach at public sex environments, street outreach, health fairs and other community sponsored events).
APEB’s Wellness Clinic currently serves over 250 people living with HIV/AIDS in Alameda County, of which 80% live at or below the poverty line, and 85% have been diagnosed with co-morbidities, such as Hepatitis C, diabetes, substance abuse, depression and alcoholism. Seventy-six percent of our HIV positive population is male, of which 85% are persons of color, predominantly African American and Latino MSM.
APEB participates in several coalitions for the provision of services to at-risk and affected populations. Through our collaborative network, we subcontract emergency financial support services out to several other agencies. This partnership allows for a wide array of well-coordinated services to be available throughout Alameda County. APEB is also a site for several out-stationed services provided by partner agencies, such as nursing case management, mental health services and legal assistance.

History:
AIDS Project of the East Bay (APEB) was founded as a program of the Pacific Center for Human Growth in Berkeley, California, in 1983, as the first cases of AIDS appeared among gay and bisexual men in the East Bay. We were the first organization dedicated to offering HIV positive services and education and prevention services in Alameda County. For over two decades, we have been at the forefront of adapting our services to demographic changes and developments in research and service strategies. In the 1980’s, APEB was one of the first organizations to design and implement programs targeted to people of color.
