The Friends of Sharon Art Studio (FOSAS) is devoted to sustaining and enhancing the Sharon Art Studio’s (SAS) to promote artistic development, craftsmanship, and creative expression. FOSAS works in cooperation with the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department (SFRP) to augment and add breadth to SAS’s art programs. FOSAS believes that art education is an essential component to a healthy community and strives to ensure that quality, noncompetitive art programs are affordable and accessible to all.

Description:
The Sharon Art Studio offers weekly classes as well as special workshops in ceramics, glass, jewelry, and painting. A wide variety of youth classes are also offered including Free Teen classes (age 15-17) and a summer art enrichment program called "Arts-in-the-Park," (ages 12-16.)

History:
Friends of Sharon Art Studio was founded in 1991 to preserve the Sharon Art program which was threatened by budget cuts to the Recreation and Park Department. The 1991 budget cuts resulted in the reduction of the teaching staff. In 1992, the Supervisor of the Arts and Crafts division, who oversaw the program, retired and the position was eliminated. To compensate for these dramatic losses, FOSAS hired a director and broadened the program. Over the years, FOSAS has played an increasingly crucial role in expanding the class offerings and currently sponsors approximately 40% of the program; supplies all the materials; maintains the studio equipment; and is the only on-site office administration.
