Berkeley Food and Housing Project's mission is to ease and end the crisis of homelessness in our community by providing emergency food and shelter, transitional housing and assistance, and long tern housing placement with support services to homeless individuals and families.

Description:
For over 35 years Berkeley Food and Husing Project has worked with homeless men, women and children. With seven programs ranging from free meal service to permanent supportive housing, Berkeley Food and Housing Project provides a continuum of care to accomodate a broad spectrum of specialized needs. Berkeley Food and Housing Project also assists low income and homeless individulas with needs and disabilities that are not effectively met by mainstream social services. The agency's hallmark is to provide services with compassion to foster a nurturing, healing environment that can effectively end an individual's cycle of homelessness

History:
Berkeley Food and Housing Project was founded as a volunteer outreach effort of University Lutheran Chapel in 1970. In 1986 Berkeley Food and Housing Project was incorporated as its own 501c3 Berkeley Food Project. As we added shelters for both men and women and case management services in the early 1990's the agency changed its name to the Berkeley Emergency Food and Housing Project. And with the addition of permanent supportive housing and a focus on permanent not emergency solutions to homelessness the agency changed its name to the Berkeley Food and Housing Project in 2003
