Walden House, Inc. was founded in 1969 by a dedicated and diverse group of people -- some professionals and some recovering street addicts as an unfunded and volunteer effort -- to help homeless adolescents in San Francisco with substance abuse problems. In response to the needs of the communities it serves, Walden House programs and services have grown both in the diversity of clients served and in geographic scope. While the size, scope and geographic spread of the agency has grown significantly since its inception, the mission of Walden House remains the same, “Giving Hope-Changing Lives”.
Description:
The agency now serves approximately 30,000 youth, adults, and families each year at 20 sites throughout California. In helping our clients, we also help our communities by promoting wellness, healthy relationships, productive living, and community involvement. Walden House is guided by a belief in the positive transformative power that the community can have on the client, and the healthy client can have on the community. The agency’s values include respect, compassion, caring, and safety for all agency staff and clients; a commitment to social responsibility; respect for and improvement of the justice system; embracing differences; and expanding capacity and strengthening treatment systems. The overarching goal of Walden House is to ensure that every participant attains long-term recovery from addiction. This means living free of drug and alcohol abuse, but it also means restoring hope for a viable future, one that includes meaningful employment, stable housing, and re-socialization with family and friends. During 38 years of operation Walden House has developed a wide spectrum of services to help our clients meet the challenge of rebuilding their lives. We offer comprehensive adult, adolescent and family services including client outreach, individual and group counseling; linkages to primary medical care and other community based human services; HIV/AIDS specific treatment services; professional mental health services; job skills training, career counseling, and educational services; transitional housing and aftercare support; and in-prison and parolee re-entry programs. Walden House values diversity throughout the agency, including in our Board of Directors membership and staff. Walden House currently employs 550 people, many successfully recovering from substance abuse, and over half of whom are members of racial/ethnic minority communities.
