Youth Emergency Assistance Hostel (YEAH!)

Last updated on October 21, 2008

YEAH!'s mission is to support homeless transitional age (18-25) youth as they move into young adulthood. To achieve this mission we provide them with comprehensive services including: shelter, basic needs, case management, counseling, educational and employment linkages, longer-term housing assistance, and opportunities for meaningful community involvement.

Description:
The YEAH! vision for transitional age youth who are living on the streets of Berkeley is that all who so wish will participate in a supportive community that is a model of youth development principles in action.

The YEAH! community, made up of staff and volunteers, will continue to meet the basic needs of homeless youth and help them to acquire the educational, vocational, and self-management skills essential for moving them toward greater self-sufficiency and higher functioning. YEAH! further envisions that the city of Berkeley itself will become the "campus" for these youth-with Berkeley citizens providing the opportunities for them to build skills and relationships in the greater community.

History:
In the fall of 2002, four Berkeley women came together with a common concern: the growing number of young men and women living on our sidewalks and sleeping in our alleys, doorways and parks. While some daytime services were being provided in the form of drop-in centers, at night, a youth without housing had no legal place to sleep. The youth avoid adult shelters because they don't allow their pets entry and because youth often feel unsafe among adult homeless. The young people were piling up citations for vagrancy just for trying to find a place to get out of the rain and wind and cold at night. As of autumn 2006, YEAH! is the only organization in Berkeley specifically providing services to homeless youth.
