Our vision is to educate urban youth to become successful in life. To accomplish this goal three design functions were developed and guide our direction: our vision statement, mission, and our institutional mission Small classroom sizes provide students with small group instruction and one-on-one support as needed. Students requiring additional assistance work with specialists to overcome gaps in learning.
Description:
E.C. Reems Academy is a school that enriches the lives of students. We offer a safe, educational environment Our vision is to educate urban youth to become successful in life. To accomplish this goal three design functions were developed and guide our direction: our vision statement, mission, and our institutional mission. We have proven that a school can become a beacon of success in a community. Our students continue to achieve heights that far surpass expectations. The STAR State Test Scores have risen over the years, beginning in the high 400’s. The goal is to reach the apex of 1000 points, from 0-1000 is defined in four categories: Far Below Basic, Below Basic, Proficient, and Advanced. In 2006 our students scored in the 700’s, specifically 713. One third of our students scored in the Advanced and Proficient categories. Two thirds scored on the upper end of Basic and one third in the lower end. The scores simply confirm that we are academically on the rise and have become a competitive school, truly an educational beacon and a practical demonstration of what success looks like in a community plagued with violence. Our academic programs, enrichment courses, the after school educational institute (tutoring and homework support), after school extracurricular activities, teacher induction and retention programs all contribute to academic, social, and behavioral achievement. Our students claim victory. High Schools are beginning to recruit our students and shortly we will claim that colleges are doing the same. E.C. Reems Academy is the beacon of hope that its founders dreamed of in the late 1990’s, a school that is area hub of learning. The students enter in Kindergarten and graduate from the Eighth grade. Our teacher – student ratio is low, we provide additional support for struggling students, have the most recent state adopted textbooks, supplemental materials, and open ears. Our setting is unique, our quest authentic and our outcomes are visible. We reached our threshold in 2006. Students that attended our school in 2000 graduated from high school this year. Many are college bound, and parents credit our school for providing the foundation for success. We are a team with a vision that far outweighs the average goal of having a lucrative career. Our staff, teachers, and volunteers view our purpose as our avocation, our mission in life. Our hard work confirms that everyone can learn given the necessary tools. Self esteem is tied to success and success is derived from learning and doing well in school. Our students are successful and are in training to become the next generation of leaders and societal change agents.
History:
E.C. Reems Academy is a not for profit education agency. We are a public K-8 charter school. We serve the East Oakland, a disadvantaged community. The majority of the students are either African American or Hispanic. We currently serve 358 students. Academic achievement is at the center of all we do and offer, including our ASES After School Program. This program provides a safe, educational enrichment program for over 130 students. Reems Academy is currently in its second authorization. We have operated for seven years and have successfully decreased the achievement gap commonly experienced by urban youth.
