The Up On Top After School and Summer Program offer individual attention, tutoring and instruction in the creative arts in a nurturing, supportive environment that includes the whole family. This program offers academic and arts enrichment for free. Since the children come from homes that are below the poverty level, they qualify for the Free Lunch Program through the San Francisco Unified School District. Up On Top has 50 students in grades K-5 at two campuses.

Description:
Up On Top’s goal is to give every child a healthy start. The objectives are to increase reading and math achievement through support; support the children and their families in the Tenderloin and Western Addition; and improve personal and family relationships.

The agency always needs committed tutors and is looking for additional board members.

The agency's mission is to provide licensed, safe, educational and enriching after school and summer care for children from low-income families primarily in the San Francisco Tenderloin and Western Addition neighborhoods. The program values and emphasizes fostering interrelationships among the children, their families, public school personnel, Up On Top’s volunteers and staff and the community at large.

History:
The program began in 1998 when concerned members of the First Unitarian Universalist Church formed a committee to research the unmet needs of low-income families moving from welfare to work. Up On Top opened its doors in 2001 and today, Up On Top is a community-based 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and a licensed day care facility.

As part of Up On Top’s strategic plan for 2007-2010, the board of directors decided to expand the program to a second campus. The Tenderloin Community School agreed to collaborate with Up On Top, which opened a second campus there for low-income, ethnic minority children who are at-risk of underachieving.
