The mission of the SFOS is to foster the culture and cultivation of orchids and to promote education of its members and the public about orchids. Our goals include: to exchange information from exhibitions, publications, and the Internet, to maintain a reference library, to participate in worldwide orchid activities. Every year the San Francisco Orchid Society hosts two orchid shows in San Francisco: Pacific Orchid Exposition & OrchidFest. Setting up these shows takes a lot of time and commitment from society members, friends, family, and volunteers. This year we are reaching out to the community to ask for your help in making it possible. On average, it takes about 1,000 volunteers to set up the Pacific Orchid Exposition. Thanks to everyone who was able to contact us and thank you VolunteerMatch for helping. We will be posting our volunteer positions up for the upcoming "Orchids Gone Wild" Pacific Orchid Exposition 2008 soon.
Description:
The San Francisco Orchid Society schedules an annual exposition that serves as its major fund-raiser and educational outreach program. Next year, it is going to hold an orchid show with the theme “Green…with Envy” at the 2009 Pacific Orchid Exposition (POE), March 5-8 at Fort Mason Center’s Festival Pavilion in San Francisco. The 57th annual fundraiser will offer a unique look at the importance of respecting the environment in all aspects of horticulture and emphasizing the importance of conserving the varied natural habitats that orchids need to survive. On March 5, Thursday, participants can also taste and buy different wines on the Gala Benefit Preview Night. In addition, smaller educational opportunities for the community such as an orchid fair with educational talks and sales scheduled at various times during the year. Lectures and skill sessions on the species and their care and culture take place on a monthly basis at the regularly scheduled meeting of the Society. Activities that the San Francisco Orchid Society schedules for its members only include excursions to orchid-related facilities like commercial or private greenhouses.
