The Bay Area Summer Opera Theater Institute, better known as BASOTI, is an intensive opera singer development program, training pre-professional singers for a career in opera. We believe that through deepening our students' self-expression and sense of artistic fulfillment, and through offering high-quality public performances, BASOTI contributes to the preservation of opera as a contemporary art form in the Bay Area and worldwide.

Description:
We provide training for singers with 30 recognized professionals in the field of opera. We have classes in The Business of Singing, Acting for Singers, Aria Preparation, The Alexander Technique, Audition Techniques, Ensemble Singing, How to read and learn an opera role, and Diction for foreign languages. We present over 30 Opera Scenes in 3 Public Performances, and we produce and present 4 complete opera productions, some with full orchestra in 14 public performances.

History:
We began our program in Marin County in 1992 at the San Domenico School under the umbrella of the San Anselmo Organ Festival. We incorporated in 1995 under our own auspices and have presented the program at the University of San Francisco, Holy Names College in Oakland, The Regency Theater, the Florence Gould Theater at the Legion of Honor, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music and the Star of the Sea School. Our home venue is now St. Monica's School in San Francisco, and we are extending our performances with orchestra to the 142Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley and Spreckels Theater in Rohnert Park. We have grown from 30 to 80 students in a five-week program during the summer and present over 18 public performances and Master Classes.
