Golden Thread Productions is dedicated to theatre that explores Middle Eastern cultures and identities as represented throughout the globe. Our mission is to build an organization that consistently produces the highest quality theatre about Middle Eastern culture and to establish a dynamic artistic community and an expanding audience. And to make the Middle East a regular part of the American Theatre Experience and make theatre a regular part of the Middle Eastern community’s cultural experience.
Description:
Through the transformative power of theatre Golden Thread Productions aims to create a world where our common experience as human beings supersedes our cultural and political differences. Our Guiding Principles are to develop and produce innovative works that intrigue, inquire and influence; discover, develop and support Middle Eastern artists; promote the rich texts and diverse performance styles of the Middle East; and seek and include the many talents of our diverse community in the production of socially conscious works with a progressive political sensibility. In our vast imagination, the Middle East is defined not by geographical boundaries and political separations, but as the shared experience of the people, who throughout history have been touched by its tales, melodies and aromas. The Middle East lives inside us, as we redefine ourselves, we redefine the Middle East.
History:
Torange Yeghiazarian founded Golden Thread Productions in October 1996 with the help of most excellent friends and family members: Maria Zamroud, Termeh Yeghiazarian, Gen Hayashida, and Kamshad Kooshan. Our name is inspired by the myth of Aridne who offered Theseus a ball of golden thread to guide him out of the labyrinth. Since then, Golden Thread Productions has worked diligently to probe and celebrate the Middle Eastern culture and identity in all its complexity. Made up of artists from all over the world, the company exemplifies Theatre’s ability to transcend cultural and political boundaries and to encourage an active dialogue. Golden Thread Productions’ commitment to in depth exploration and understanding is imminently important. This is true now more than ever given the volatility of our relationship with the Middle East and the global ramifications of our decisions influenced by our understanding of the region. Golden Thread Productions’ debut production was Operation No Penetration, Lysistrata 97! The classic Greek antiwar comedy was adapted to a Middle Eastern setting where Palestinian and Israeli women unite to force men into signing a peace treaty. Since then the company has continued to creatively present challenging social issues on stage: from Karim Alrawi’s Deep Cut, exploring the universality of human rights received its premiere in 2001 at the Thick House to the San Francisco Bay Area premiere of Nine Armenians by award-winning playwright, Leslie Ayvazian, at Magic Theatre in 2002 to Yussef El Guindi’s Back of the Throat in 2005 examining the loss of civil liberties in the aftermath of the Patriot Act. Back of the Throat is now being produced around the US by such distinguished companies as New York’s The Flee and Chicago’s Silk Road Theatre Project. Golden Thread’s first internally developed production, Love Missile was an original anti-war musical. In 2007 the highlight was the production of Benedictus, another collaboratively-written play. Golden Thread Productions' hallmark event is ReOrient, an annual festival of plays exploring the Middle East. Debuted in 1999, more than thirty plays have been presented at the ReOrient festival, majority of them world and or U.S. premieres.
