Youth For Service is a public/private venture which uses an innovative and strategic approach to empower in risk youth to realize their full potential as meaningful contributors to the work force and to the community.
Description:
Youth For Service has a 50 year history of working with youth to develop job skills, educational opportunities and employment services. Our current focus is funding projects which provide these kinds of career focused opportunities. We have recently funded a scholarship program at the San Francisco State University College of Extended Learning for SF youth who are interested in certification in the area of digital media. Our latest project is the Turning Heads Sewing Cooperative for Girls where teen girls learn about sewing and fashion. They are then given the opportunity to earn money through the sales of products produced by the cooperative.
History:
Youth For Service was founded in 1957 to offer young gang members the opportunity to contribute to their communities, while learning skills in the building trades. Over the years the agency developed programs ranging from auto mechanics to computer repair, as well as GED classes. After the earth quake in 1989, the new safety guidelines required an upgrade that would have cost $20 million, which the agency was never able to achieve. The building was sold in 2005, and the decision was made to become a funding agency rather than delivering direct services.
