MISSION STATEMENT

COMPEER PROGRAMS nationwide seek to diminish the universal loneliness and isolation experienced by individuals affected by a persistent mental illness. Individuals that have successfully coped with such a challenge often tell us that social support is essential to their recovery. For many individuals such social support is not available. We wish to make it available.

Description:
Compeer staff recruits, screens, trains and matches community volunteers and then supports the one-on-one friendship to help develop trust, develop communication and social skills, increase self-esteem and self-reliance. We build a bridge into the general community and assist with re-integration efforts.
Our volunteers need to be caring, sensitive adults and need to be able to spend four hours per month with their Compeer friend. Experience with mental illness is helpful but not required.
We match individuals by interest, geographical closeness and cultural appropriateness.

History:
Since 2005 Compeer of San Mateo County, Inc. has been an affiliate of Compeer, Inc., a Rochester-based non profit organization. The program guidelines were developed over the last thirty years with the cooperation of the Boston and Rochester Universities' Psychiatric Rehabilitation Departments. Compeer is listed by the American Psychiatric Association on the best practices list for socialization programs and has received the 2006 Eli Lily Reintegration Award, besides several others. The local San Mateo County chapter serves adults only at this time.
