Rebuilding Together SF, formerly Christmas in April, provides free home repair and renovation programs for low-income, elderly, and disabled San Franciscans and for non-profit and neighborhood facilities. We engage thousands of volunteers each year in our projects.
Description:
Rebuilding Together San Francisco fosters warmth, safety, and independence in our community by leveraging resources and mobilizing volunteers to repair homes and revitalizing neighborhood facilities. We fulfill our mission primarily through 2 programs - our Rebuilding Weekend which occurs annually and our Home Safety & Independence program which occurs year round. Rebuilding Weekend occurs on the last weekend of April each year - dozens of companies & local businesses fiscally sponsor 20-25 homes & 20-25 facility renovations, engaging thousands of volunteers...and all on one weekend! We are always in need of skilled volunteers - some services we provide to homeowners & facility staff include: plumbing, electrical work, landscaping, painting, redesigning & implementing storage options, and more. Our Home Safety & Independence program seeks to help senior & disabled home owners age in their own homes safely and as long as possible. We install smoke detectors, bathroom safety modifications, grab bars, railings, and whatever else staff determine as a safety necessity. Many of our clients are referred to us from City agencies, senior programs, hospital, nursing, & outpatient services, and various other health organizations. Rebuilding Together San Francisco is a local affiliate of Rebuilding Together, a national organization that includes more than 270 affiliates serving 550 communities nationwide, and mobilizing thousands of volunteers each year.
History:
Rebuilding Together SF began in 1989 in response to the Loma Prieta earthquake. Known then as Christmas in April San Francisco, the organization was founded through the grassroots collaborative effort of several business, labor and community organizations in San Francisco. Now in our 17th year, we continue to develop and maintain long-term partnerships in our efforts to build community throughout San Francisco. We highly value the homeowners, nonprofits, tradespeople, and corporate and community groups who are the backbone of the work we do. Nearly 45,000 volunteers from businesses, labor organizations, congregations and the community have participated in our annual Rebuilding Weekend and other year-round programs. In the last 17 years, we have renovated more than 1000 homes and nearly 225 community and nonprofit facilities in San Francisco.
