History:
From one group home…
For over 30 years, MBH, Inc. has grown from a single group home into one of the largest private, non-profit community service agencies in California.
The founder, Anson Hartson, opened that first group home in 1975 in the tiny coastal town of Moss Beach, south of San Francisco. A former Probation Officer, Anson had seen far too many juvenile offenders grow up to be criminals. He wanted to do something about it - to be part of the solution, not a part of the problem. So he became a group home parent.
By 1984, MBH, Inc. was running 12 six-bed group homes. The agency also began its first youth employment program - teaching teens the skills they needed to become independent adults.
Recognizing that most children thrive in a family setting rather than in an institution, MBH, Inc. shifted from primarily group homes to community foster homes, obtaining a home finding license from the state. This move began MBH, Inc.'s focus on recruiting, training and supporting individuals and families to care for children in their communities.
1987 was a banner year for MBH, Inc. Our foster family agency, Aspiranet Foster & Family Services, was licensed by the state and opened its second district office. We also founded the Excell Center, a highly structured residential and educational program for troubled boys.
In the early 1990's, MBH, Inc. began sharing its resources and experience with communities - creating partnerships that address local problems. In the intervening years, all of its programs have grown and flourished. Today, Aspiranet Foster & Family Services cares for 3,000 foster children each year from offices all over the state. Excell Center helps over 100 boys a year. The leadership of MBH, Inc. continues to work with communities to address the issues facing California's families and children.
During that time, MBH, Inc. became the lead agency on an innovative and unique community collaborative serving a west side neighborhood of San Francisco. The Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center provides after-school programs, peer and community mentoring programs, youth development and community safety programs. SNBC has been recognized as a model program by local, county, state and federal agencies for its collaborative approach and successful outcomes with children and families.
MBH, Inc. continues to innovate by becoming the lead agency for several new programs: Welcome Home Baby in Contra Costa County; Aspiranet WRAP Services in Kern County; Aspiranet Behavioral Health serving several counties in the Central Valley Region; Experience Corps in San Francisco and Oakland; and Tech Corps California. As a leader in the area of child welfare, MBH Inc. established the Sibling Connection Initiative to educate and advocate for siblings placed in separate foster homes within California.
MBH, Inc. management team continiously seeks opportunities to leverage its strengths on behalf of those who can benefit from those strengths, in order to fulfill the organization's vision.
