Liss Fain Dance expands the choreographic and performance parameters of contemporary dance by presenting original work that integrates into the choreography the ideas and designs of artists from other disciplines and technologists.
Description:
Liss Fain’s dynamic and emotionally poignant movement blends the flow and movement experimentation of modern dance with the kinetic precision and vertical lift of ballet. The music she works with— rhythmically complex, emotionally evocative, challenging both the choreographer and the dancer—is integral to the development of the movement and ideas of the piece. Since its founding in 1989, the company has collaborated with film makers, visual designers, musicians and technologists on projects that have toured nationally and internationally.
History:
Liss Fain Dance (LFD) is a nine-member modern dance company that presents an annual home season at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, and also performs by invitation throughout the Bay Area, California, nationally, and internationally. The company has recently started an international cultural exchange with choreographers from abroad---selected choreographers work with the company and teach workshops in San Francisco and LFD does the same in with their company. The artistic director's work has been commissioned by MIT, the Exploratorium, and the Apple Multimedia Lab, and in 2000 the company presented Quarry, which used the Internet to enable real-time collaboration between artists, streaming images of sculptor Richard Deutsch. Recent work includes the company's three-part series, Frames of Light, an integrated performance series created in collaboration with lighting designer Matthew Antaky and featuring other Bay Area dance companies; Eclipse of the Soul, supported by a grant from the San Francisco Arts Commission; and Flood, a multi-media collaboration with filmmakers Richard Kizu-Blair and Drew Takahashi and visual designer Matthew Antaky. In November, LFD followed Mayor Newsom’s speech as the featured performers at the official opening of Mint Plaza, San Francisco's newest outdoor plaza and arts space.
