The Family Link is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit guest house providing accommodations and hospitality for family members and other loved ones from outside the Bay Area of people facing life-threatening illnesses or injuries, significant medical treatment, or end of life.

Description:
Our restored Edwardian home with six private guest bedrooms, shared bathrooms, living room, kitchen, dining area and garden serves as a home away from home for the families and loved ones of people at a critical point in their lives. Guests of The Family Link are family members and loved ones who are either visiting or accompanying an out of the area patient to San Francisco, or visiting a San Francisco resident who is unable to accommodate them in their residence. We ask our guests to pay $30 per room per night, but no one is turned away due to the lack of funds. The majority of our guests have limited resources and cannot afford extended stay in Bay Area hotels. In addition to the financial impact of their trip, interruption of income, and their loved one's medical expenses, guests are coping with the painful news that their loved one is seriously ill, dealing with the difficulties of medical treatment, or at the end of their life. In the communal family atmosphere at The Family Link, guests can share their experiences with others who are in a similar situation. Our on-site Program Director and volunteers provide valuable community, emotional and practical resources to guests.

History:
The Family Link was established as a non-church affiliated, nonprofit organization in 1985. We opened our present location in 1995. Initially most of our guests were visiting people with HIV/AIDS. Today, the loved ones of cancer patients account for about half our guests, and HIV/AIDS accounts for about twenty percent. Accidents, other trauma, specialized major medical procedures and surgery, and numerous other life-threatening conditions account for thirty percent of our guests. About half of our guests are visiting loved ones at the end of the person's life. The co-founder of The Family Link, Sister Ruth Hall, is our Program Director.
