SF CARD (Community Agencies Responding to Disaster) is a dynamic San Francisco organization with the mission of delivering disaster preparedness training, tools and services to the hundreds of non-profit organizations and congregations located here.
Description:
SF CARD drives disaster preparedness into community organizations through one-on-one site visits to agencies and congregations, general information exchanges, newsletters, and by providing links to the first responder networks in San Francisco.
History:
The Loma Prieta Earthquake of 1989 demonstrated the lack of focus on vulnerable populations. SF CARD was formed to help address that gap. If agencies who serve the most vulnerable populations on a day-to-day basis could be given the tools and training to continue outreach to their clients after a major disaster then that would provide invaluable assistance—possibly lifesaving assistance—while the first responder network is organizing. In 1994 The United Way of the Bay Area was so impressed with the CARD model that they began supporting Bay Area CARDs through generous yearly grants.
