Founded in 2004, World Action for Humanity (WAH) works to raise awareness and resources for projects serving vulnerable and orphaned children in developing countries. At the core of our mission is the belief that direct support to projects that are initiated, developed and managed by local citizens at the community level are most effective. Because WAH is all volunteer, 100% of every dollar raised goes directly to its projects.
Description:
Since 2004, WAH has supported the Green Door Home for Children in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, a locally run foster care home providing education and care in a family environment to 10 orphaned children. Green Door is the first and largest project of the Boona Baana Center for Children’s Rights, a local organization managing a series of projects assisting children in Tanzania. In early 2007, WAH expanded its work significantly to partner with House of Hope in southwestern Uganda, an ambitious project providing education, nutrition, medical care and social services to approximately 100 orphaned children. House of Hope operates the House of Action primary school with 110 students – the majority of whom receive free tuition and additional extended care through this program.
History:
Co-founded by husband and wife team Nicole and Pedro Carta, WAH was launched after the two spent a volunteer vacation in Tanzania in 2003 at the Boona Baana Center in Tanzania. Deciding to continue this work after returning to San Francisco, the pair incorporated WAH as a 501c3 non-profit organization in California. WAH’s 2008 operating budget is $44,300. Each year the organization raises 80 – 90 percent of each of its partner project’s budgets through local fundraising events and individual donors. WAH currently receives no formal foundation or government support.
