The purpose of TRIP of San Mateo County is to promote the concept of neighbors helping neighbors and to complement public transportation services by: reimbursing volunteer drivers $0.32 per mile to transport individuals who face barriers to, or have difficulty accessing existing public transit and/or Redi-Wheels services; providing a no cost service to the rider for quality of life transportation needs; providing an alternative low cost transportation service to fill gaps in existing services.
Description:
The riders will have attained the age of 65. Live in San Mateo County; the ride have to begin or end in San Mateo County. Have a maximum mileage trip allowance not to exceed 50 miles, one way. Have a maximum mileage trip allowance not to exceed 170 miles per month. Any given rider can recruit one or more volunteer drivers, with the assistance of TRIP staff. Schedules rides directly with their drivers. Arrange escort service by agreement, between driver and rider, including door to through door service. Turn in a monthly odometer mileage reimbursement form, receive from Family Service and pass on the reimbursed amount, tax free, to their Volunteer driver(s). A rider can have different drivers in a month for different trips. Seniors deserve to age with grace and dignity. We hear all the time how getting older is depressing; mostly if you are alone. This is our way to help seniors be more independent, and also, help them to get their social lives back. Our drivers, not only are the persons who would be giving the rides, they also, turn out to be their friends.
History:
The design and organization of Family Service's TRIP are drawn from and reflect the experience of one of the most successful senior transportation programs in the country: the Transportation Reimbursement & Information Project (TRIP) of Riverside County, CA. The Transportation Reimbursement for Independence Program(TRIP) is an innovative and proven non-emergency, volunteer-based community transportation initiative that promotes and supports independence and quality of life for seniors who face barriers to mobility in the community and addresses the concerns of the San Mateo County Senior Mobility Action Plan Steering Committee; supports the goals and objectives of the County of San Mateo Strategic Plan for Services for Older Adults; is consistent with MTC's Lifeline Transportation Program objectives.
