Golden Gate National Recreation Area - Weed Watchers
Powered by Truist
[ View Opportunity ]
Last updated on May 6, 2008

Our objective is to train volunteers to identify and report high-risk incipient invasive plants while hiking/patrolling trails and roadsides in designated areas in Golden Gate National Recreational Area (GGNRA).

Description:
The National Park Service’s Inventory and Monitoring Program is charged with “improving natural resource management through greater reliance on scientific knowledge.” Invasive species are one of the top priorities for monitoring in our national parks, and early detection of new plant species is a key focus for the San Francisco Bay Area Network (SFAN) of national parks. Discovering weeds before they become well-established is critical to reducing damage to ecosystem integrity, preventing the loss of habitat for rare plants and animals, and preventing costly natural resource management. The SFAN has established an invasive species early detection program to create a priority list of plants with documented invasive potential that occur at low densities, and to institute a system for patrolling trails, roadsides, and waterways for these priority weeds. Trained volunteers will be an integral component of this priority weed search effort.
