Project SHINE is a national service-learning program that builds partnerships among community colleges, universities and community-based organizations to benefit older immigrants, refugees, and college students.

Description:
Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) is a national service-learning program that places college students as volunteer tutors/aides in local ESL (English as a Second Language) and Citizenship programs. Student volunteers receive academic credit while providing valuable service to immigrants in the surrounding communities.
SHINE links college students with immigrants and refugees seeking to learn English and navigate the complex path to U.S. citizenship.

History:
Project SHINE was initiated at City College of San Francisco in collaboration with San Francisco State University in 1997. Each semester more than 150 City College of San Francisco and San Francisco State University students work as volunteer coaches in over 60 City College of San Francisco classes, preparing elders to take the Immigration and Naturalization Service citizenship test. In addition, these volunteers work with adults struggling to achieve both literacy and English.
