Surfrider Foundation is a non-profit grassroots environmental organization dedicated to the protection and enjoyment of the world's oceans, waves and beaches, for all people, through conservation, activism, research and education.

Description:
The San Mateo County Chapter of Surfrider Foundation is made-up of volunteers who are interested in helping to protect the coast. Despite what the name might suggest, Surfrider volunteers aren't necessarily surfers--volunteers come from a variety of backgrounds, occupations, and interests. The common thread is a deep care for the well-being of our coastal environments. Every volunteer has a different skill set and time availability; in recognition of this fact, the chapter works hard to create a broad set of volunteer opportunities.

History:
Founded in 1984 by a handful of visionary surfers in Malibu, California, the Surfrider Foundation now maintains over 50,000 members and 80 chapters worldwide. Since 1999, the San Mateo County (SMC) chapter has been acting locally to address these same types of concerns within San Mateo County and its coastline. Surfrider SMC partners with other local chapters and a coalition of land and marine protection organizations to protect the unique resources of the Monterey Bay and Gulf of Farallones National Marine Sanctuaries that align the San Mateo county coast. Our Blue Water Task Force water quality testing program strives to improve the purity of water flowing from our coastal streams into the surf zone. While other chapter programs maintain, expand and improve public access to our region's shoreline, our beach cleanups keep our beaches free of trash and debris.
