Excelsior Action Group is a non-profit community and economic development organization serving the Excelsior corridor of San Francisco that works to create a safer, cleaner, and more welcoming community through organizing, advocacy, economic development and public improvement projects. EAG implements a variety of programs to achieve its goals: cleanliness, a sidewalk greening project, youth mural projects, and the annual Excelsior Festival.
History:
In mid-2002, District 11 Supervisor Gerardo Sandoval held several town hall meetings at the Ocean Avenue Presbyterian Church regarding commercial revitalization on Mission Street in the Excelsior. From these initial meetings, the Local Initatives Support Corporation (LISC) and the Mayor's Office of Economic and Workforce Development (MOEWD) began a six month assessment of opportunities and needs in the Excelsior.
Stakeholders in the community continued to meet bi-weekly at the Church in order to give input to LISC. From these meetings, it was clear that community members wanted to take charge and act. Thus, in October 2002, the Excelsior Action Group was formed and a partnership was created with Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center to form Excelsior Neighborhood Commercial Revitalization (ENCoRe).
in 2006, Excelsior Action Group dissolved the ENCoRe partnership and begun incorporation as a non-profit entity. EAG continues to work with Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center on public safety, affordable housing, and youth development projects throughout the year. With BHNC's support, EAG was able to gain the technical expertise, capacity and knowledge to start the Excelsior's first non-profit community development corporation.
