To ensure that every school aged child in San Francisco has a warm, nutritious, organic, locally produced mid-day meal irregardless of the number of children in the class or the children's location within the city.

Description:
In addition to feeding the children's bodies we also have an educational component to feed and stimulate their minds. We'll spend 10 days studying in depth each of the following subjects as appropriate to age in multiple media: 1. nutrition, food groups, farm fresh foods vs. supermarket and canned and frozen 2. recycling: the entire cycle. practice in the classroom, visits from green zebra, and golden gate, parent program, composting in the class, child sized compost buckets for home. 3. gardening, using compost when preparing the land along with other soil amendments, ongoing tending of the garden 4. learning about what each of our bodies specifically need to grow, creating menus, cooking, making cook books, perhaps selling them as fundraisers, parent inclusion meetings 5. tying together everything we've done together, reviewing, feedback from the kids and parents, viewing filming and editing, parent night, documentary viewing and celebrating. Presentation of cookbooks.

History:
Conceived in an lightbulb moment after hearing on the news that there were somewhere around 150 children in the central and eastern parts of the city- my neighborhood- going hungry every day I was so upset i had to leave the room. while pulling my hair and walking down our 50 foot hallway i did the "V-8" slap on the forehead and said out loud,"Rochelle Louise!(you know you're in trouble when you call yourself by your middle name!)
what have you done for over 20 years? What kind of a business do you own? how many people do you know in the industry and in all the arms that support it? can't you pull this off in a few weeks? and you have how many months? get off the pity pot and get to work!!!"
So the next day I started filing what i could to begin the process of creating a non profit corporation that could hold in trust monies to feed those children. I got promises for donations of goods for a silent auctions, the Bay Area's Best Private Caterers and chefs and food donated for a 5 course dinner, a theater group to perform after a groaning board of artisan desserts, a raffle with a vacation as the grand prize for our raffle, a venue comped 100%. All within less than 3 weeks. When the paperwork got too complicated I found a wonderful pro bono attorney who's been wonderful.

But our Accountant nixed our date for our Gala as our federal non profit number hadn't come through yet thus we couldn't promise that their donation absolutely 100% guaranteed would be tax deductible.

So thank yous for their donations, could they please hold onto them for us until we do have our auction. Very humbling. Thank heaven's that this isn't about anything except feeding those kids and educating them in a really fun innovative ways.

So, at the moment we're just waiting for the number to come through. Selling PB&J lunches downtown to get some name recognition and wracking our brains about what else we can do as we wait. We're also discussing a date for our Gala so we can start to put that together.
Things may not have gone the way we would have liked this summer, but we are determined to be a driving force in the fight against hunger in our backyard. So the only place we're going is forward!
