Women Of Color Resource Center
Powered by Truist
Last updated on September 26, 2008

Founded in 1990, the Women of Color Resource Center (WCRC) is headquartered in the San Francisco Bay Area and promotes the political, economic, social and cultural well being of women and girls of color in the United States. Informed by a social justice perspective that takes into account the status of women internationally, WCRC is committed to organizing and educating women of color across lines of race, ethnicity, religion, nationality, class, sexual orientation, physical ability and age.

Description:
WCRC's Peace and Solidarity Program raises the voices of women of color in opposition to war and militarism. War, militarism and state violence distort and destroy women's lives worldwide. Every woman in the US is affected. Every woman suffers from the massive deformation of the national budget - a budget that magically transforms our tax dollars into fabulous profits for defense contractors, but comes up short for education, childcare and healthcare. WCRC's Peace and Solidarity Program focuses on the gender and race dimensions of war, militarism and empire building. WCRC educates and mobilizes women of color as participants and leaders in the global effort to build a world at peace.

Class and racial inequalities in the US powerfully shape women’s lives and options, leaving poor women of color to face the most substantial burdens of racism and sexism. Economic and racial justice issues are central to a women’s human rights agenda.

Securing human rights for all women and girls requires that we build a society supportive of full access to education at all levels; jobs at wages sufficient to support individual and family well-being; affordable health care and housing; a healthy environment; full political participation; support for especially vulnerable populations; prevention of and protection from sexual harassment, rape and domestic violence; full exercise of reproductive rights; culture and media supportive of positive female images and young women’s development; and sufficient leisure to enjoy full human and spiritual development.

WCRC’s Economic Justice and Human Rights Program uniquely combines scholarly analysis and participatory research with coalition building, advocacy and leadership development.

Ongoing projects include the Welfare Rights Education and Advocacy Project (WREAP), which currently focuses on research and education strategies related to family cap policies, and the Welfare Radio Collaborative, a skills training and leadership development project for low-income women.

History:
WCRC was co-founded in 1990 by members of the Third World Women's Alliance, Linda Burnham and Miriam Ching-Louie.
