The Mary Elizabeth Inn
Our mission is to break the cycle of poverty and homelessness for women in the Bay area by providing low income housing and support services. It is the vision of the Mary Elizabeth Inn to support the most vulnerable women in San Francisco by providing the housing, support and resources necessary for women to attain financial and emotional stability. Women served at the Mary Elizabeth Inn include those who are homeless, women with a history of substance abuse, individuals with disabilities, and victims of domestic violence.
Description:
The Mary Elizabeth Inn provides 93 subsidized single occupancy units for our residents. While our support services team provides full time case management services and comprehensive programming with a focus on recovery from substance abuse, physical and mental wellness, domestic violence support groups, and vocational and educational readiness.The Mary Elizabeth Inn also provides a meal program, bi-monthly food bank and computer education for all residents.
History:
In 1914 the Mary Elizabeth Inn was founded by a woman ahead of her time, Mrs. Lizzie Snyder Glide. With an awareness of the great need for affordable safe housing for single women who were coming to San Francisco seeking employment, schooling, or leaving behind family turmoil, Lizzie Glide worked to make such a home a reality. Lizzie's legacy has provided a safe haven for over 42,000 women since 1914 and her commitment to the community is still evident in the work being done by the Mary Elizabeth Inn today.
