Camp Fire USA builds caring, confident youth and future leaders in our communities. Our vision is to stop the generational cycle of illiteracy, poverty and violent crimes that plague many youth of disadvantaged families. It is our goal to build strong alliances with at-risk youth in order to facilitate their development of the personal and social competencies needed to effectively participate and achieve success.
Description:
Camp Fire USA's after-school programs, Kids with Dreams and Teens In Action, provide academic assistance and interactive life enrichment activities. These programs teach our youth about respect, appreciating cultures and differences, setting and achieving goals, self-esteem and much more. Our programs annually serve approximately 100 youth, ages 5-18 years old. Along with the educational and valuable workshops we carry out, our youth also participate in fun games, field trips and other recreational activities. Volunteers play a vital role at our site through tutoring, mentoring and giving our youth caring attention, all while building new friendships, increasing social awareness, acquiring new job skills and having fun! Our general after-school hours are Monday through Friday, 2:45pm-6pm.
History:
Camp Fire USA began the Kids with Dreams program in 1991. Located in West Oakland, we serve mainly inner-city students of color, ages 5-18, with approximately 35 students in attendance on a daily basis. We provide a safe and structured environment for our youth to grow and mature academically, mentally and socially. Our facility is easily accessible by car and public transportation, including both BART and AC Transit. Under the larger non-profit organization Camp Fire USA, our mission is to build caring, confident youth and future leaders.
