After School Academy

The After School Academy is an academically oriented after school program that strives to improve student achievement by inspiring creativity, promoting team work, and providing a fun, safe, and supportive place for students to learn after school. Our motivated staff works closely with the teachers and administration at Costaño to offer results-driven tutoring, homework help, and academic enrichment.

Description:
Our program serves K-5 students and 6-8th grade students. Our program model is different for the elementary and middle school portions.

Elementary Program (Grades K-5)
There are three parts to our elementary program: reading support, homework help, and enrichment. Reading support consists of lessons that include vocabulary development, read aloud, and comprehension. During homework time students work in small grade level groups to get the academic support they need. Students recommended by their teachers may receive one-on-one tutoring. For enrichment, students have the opportunity to participate in everything from outdoor games to music lessons to digital media production.

Middle School Program (Grades 6-8)
There are two components to our middle school program: homework help and activity-based clubs. For the 2009-2010 school year, grades 6-8 will be in school until 4:00 pm; as a result, all students will receive homework help from certified 49er teachers during their extended day. Students will also have the option of additional study hall time in the After School Academy, with academic support from teachers and one-on-one tutors.
From 4:00-6:00 pm, middle school students have the opportunity to participate in quarterly clubs. Each quarter, they can choose either Athletics, or one Major (which meets 3 days per week) and one Minor (two days per week). Each Major and Minor features a project-based curriculum in which students are expected to create a plan, implement it, and have something to perform, show, or celebrate at the end of the quarter.
