Agency Details:

Oakland Youth Chorus

Oakland Youth Chorus provides a multi-cultural music education and performance program for youth, fostering talent, confidence and community.

Description:
Oakland Youth Chorus provides music education in chorus, percussion and dance for 800 children in elementary schools through out Oakland. OYC also leads choruses for children and youth ages 5-21 in a community site in downtown Oakland. Children and youth learn music theory based on the California Standards for music education; develop confidence in performing in front of others; and learn to appreciate the music and dance of many cultures.

OYC faculty have deep authentic expertise in the cultures of the music they are teaching, and are able to share the cultural and historical context of the music with their students. They are all professional performers of their crafts.

History:
Oakland Youth Chorus began in 1974, as a way to bridge gaps among youth of Oakland's many cultural groups. It began as a chorus for high school age youth, and has grown into a multi-faceted music education and performance program.
