A Miner Miracle is a San Francisco based non-profit organization that provides professional clothing and image counseling to low-income men, women and young adults seeking employment. The purpose of the program is to help disadvantaged people move into the workplace by educating them to present themselves well and with pride. The program enhances the employment potential and self-esteem of each client as they begin to take control of the direction of their lives.
Description:
At A Miner Miracle, each client gets valuable education and resources for job interview preparation in addition to a complete makeover from head to toe. For women this includes a private wardrobe consultation, interview appropriate clothing, new shoes and stockings, accessories, an appointment with a professional hair stylist, and grooming and cosmetic instruction and products. Men receive proper attire for blue- or white-collar jobs, new shoes and socks, accessories, underwear, a haircut, alterations, and a personal grooming kit and consultation.
As we enter our 10th year, A Miner Miracle has created a new social enterprise initiative as an "aftercare" program for A Miner Miracle's graduates as well as our next level of client. A Miner Miracle SHOP is an image counseling center and fashion boutique together under one roof. SHOP is an expansion of our original mission, allowing A Miner Miracle to provide a unique supplement and much-needed follow-up for our existing clients while also reaching out to other low income people who will benefit from our services.
History:
Founder and Executive Director Kathy Miner began by volunteering at the Salvation Army Gateway program in 1994, assisting residents as they prepared to enter the workplace. She discovered that there was a great need for the appropriate clothing and image counseling, but that the targeted agencies did not have the space, budget or access to the necessary clothing.
In her work with women from the Salvation Army and various other non-profit agencies, Kathy developed the conviction that there was a need for a single center that would provide clothing and wardrobe services to women in transition. She conferred with an advisory group of women she had helped at the shelter and asked for their suggestions regarding the type of services that would be most useful.
In 1995, from a sincere desire to address the needs of disadvantaged women, A MINER MIRACLE was born. In 2000, facing overwhelming demand, A Miner Miracle responded to the needs of the community by opening a men's division, followed by a program for young adults from ages 18 to 24. To date, A Miner Miracle has served thousands of disadvantaged clients in the San Francisco Bay Area in their quest for financial independence.
