The Art in Action mission is to bring a high quality art program to all students through the Art in Action curriculum, teacher training and support, and an integrated school program that encourages school communities to value art.
Description:
The Art in Action Program is a sequential curriculum that teaches the concepts, vocabulary and history of art, the skills and techniques of art creation, and the aesthetics of art appreciation. Each lesson starts with the analysis of a masterpiece of art, encouraging the practice of higher level thinking skills including interpretation, analysis, and evaluation. Hands-on projects related to the masterpiece inspire creativity and problem solving. Through 12 lessons a year of discussion and creation students develop an appreciation for art and skills for self-expression. Skills and concepts are introduced, reinforced, and mastered from lesson to lesson and year to year. Students learn about drawing, color theory, perspective, and design. They learn about art styles and the art of other cultures. The Art in Action program helps build critical thinking, creativity, art skills, cultural understanding and self-esteem through an engaging, exciting program.
History:
Art in Action began in 1982 in Menlo Park, California. Many public school art programs had been cut back in California as a result of Proposition 13, and Art in Action filled a significant need providing visual arts education. At this time teacher training in the arts was reduced or eliminated in California certification programs, which resulted in a generation of teachers who were deprived of art education during their primary schooling. Parents who recognized the importance of art education helped form and institute the Art in Action Program. Created by Judith Sleeth, teacher, parent, museum docent, and founder of Art in Action, Art in Action has grown through classroom experience and the guidance of teachers, educators and parents who recognize the value of art education at the primary level. Over time the discipline based, sequential lessons have been expanded and refined into a full K - 8 art appreciation and art skills program.
Today the Art in Action Program offers a high quality learning experience for all elementary & middle school students, taught by trained teachers or teacher/docent partnerships. Championed by educators and families, Art in Action fills a demand for high quality, discipline based and sequential art education curricula in nearly 100 public and private schools in the San Francisco Bay Area. Aligned with California’s visual arts academic standards, the Program currently brings art to more than 23,000 students in over 1,000 classrooms. In 2008, more than 800 children attended summer ARTcamp, and each year local libraries display over 3,000 works of student art. Art in Action emphasizes the importance of teacher training and support to ensure the ease and accessibility of teaching art.
