Our vision is an empowered inter-generational community that is safe, diverse and economically stable where affordable housing and meaningful jobs and wages are the norm. Our mission is to reduce poverty and revitalize neighborhoods in the Bay Area by building healthy communities and providing opportunities for low income residents to become economically self-sufficient.
Description:
We design affordable housing and community centers and offices in the SF-Oakland Bay Area, work with neighborhoods to ensure they are involved in the community planning process, conduct employment training services in construction for low income men and women and get them into union jobs, and work directly with families and youth to help them become self-sufficient. We are located in a central location in San Francisco's South of Market neighborhood in a building that houses all of these programs. We do our work in San Francisco and the Bay Area's low income and working class neighborhoods and have been able to make major improvements in the lives of thousands of people.
History:
A.N.D. was founded in 1973 by an idealistic group of architecture students at U.C. Berkeley who wanted to improve the overcrowded living conditions in SF and Oakland Chinatowns. Initially staffed by volunteers, over the years, A.N.D. has grown into a nationally recognized organization that has provided design services to renovate thousands of affordable housing units, train and place thousands of youth and adults in construction and cabinetry related jobs, and develop innovative services to help people overcome poverty. We have also developed three affordable housing developments with a total of 74 units of housing and an award-winning children's park, and for many years ran a cabinetshop and furniture factory that at its peak created over 60 jobs and millions of dollars in revenues.
