Description:
Back On Track's mission is to promote academic achievement for San Francisco's under-served children. We believe that academic performance is dependent on fostering confidence and stability with our students. As tutors you meet with your student once a week. Our intention is not just to help students finish homework, nor to get finished correctly or on time. Our goals are to enable students to thrive in school and to show a commitment to learning. We are a community-based tutorial program providing free one-on-one academic assistance to students in grades K-12. The students served are primarily from the Western Addition and attend public schools throughout SF. Careful matching, training, workshops, 'check-ins', computers, library games and field trips are provided.
History:
Back On Track was founded in 1988 by the partnership of Third Baptist Church and Temple Emanu-El to build bridges of opportunity and promote cultural understanding for San Francisco youth grades K-12. The grass roots efforts started with 30 student-tutor pairs meeting once a week. The program has served a diverse group of over 200 student-tutor pairs, with sessions at one point being held at multiple sites throughout San Francisco. However, after Sept 11 and due to recent budget cuts, the program currently provides services only at our largest site Third Baptist Church for some 100 pairs with session times available four days a week. The success of the program has been, and continues to be, the result of total community involvement, including the support and participation of individual, community, and corporate donors and volunteer tutors. Back On Track's strength lies in its approach: personal, consistent support for students through one-on-one tutoring. Students learn and grow from their connection with adults who support their efforts and take time to get to know them. Volunteers enjoy satisfaction from encouraging students' progress, empowering students to become academically self-reliant and getting involved in their community.
