The mission of GirlVentures is to empower adolescent girls to develop and express their strengths.

Description:
At GirlVentures, we explore self, community, culture, and environment through outdoor adventure, creative arts, and group experiences.

GirlVentures was founded on the belief that every girl has natural strengths – courage, creativity, leadership, intuition, body wisdom and compassion – to develop into a healthy woman. Our programs are designed to physically and emotionally challenge girls into new ways of thinking and relating within their environment through safe outdoor adventures, creative arts, and group experiences. The girls we serve are diverse in experience, ethnicity, race and socio-economic status.

GirlVentures offers girls the unique opportunity to uncover their true potential – through the discovery of their voice, their community, their “selves”. Since its founding in 1997, GirlVentures has played a pivotal role in the lives of over 2,400 Bay Area girls through our four core program areas: Summer Programs, School-Year Programs, Leadership Development Program, and Community Courses.

History:
Founded as Bay Area Girls Center in 1997, GirlVentures was started by Bay Area educators Elizabeth McLeod and Megan Armstrong who met while earning their Masters of Education from Harvard. While teaching in the classroom, Megan and Elizabeth discovered what many studies had documented—adolescent girls were experiencing disturbing losses of self-esteem and confidence which in many instances lead to depression, eating disorders, substance abuse, early pregnancy, school failure, and other self-destructive behaviors. These same studies also documented that a loss in confidence among middle-school girls creates tentative learners, leading to a real loss in competence. Ultimately, girls caught in this vicious cycle are likely to close many doors to professional career goals, economic prosperity, and healthy psychological development.

To address the mounting needs of adolescent girls, GirlVentures was created to help girls recognize and celebrate their strengths and to assist them as they navigate the difficult and sometimes traumatic transition from childhood to adolescence.

During GirlVentures' first summer of operation, 14 girls participated in our inaugural Project Courage course. Since that time, approximately 2,200 girls have participated in our year-round programs.
