The Buchanan YMCA is a community branch that serves the Western Addition, Japantown, lower Pacific Heights and Opera Plaza neighborhoods. We are seeking volunteer to aid in various areas, including Board members, tutors, mentors, and group exercise classes.

Description:
The Buchanan YMCA offers community programs such as the Western Addition Safe Haven, Western Addition Beacon Center, New Traditions Afterschool Care, Hayward Rec Connect, Day Camp for youth and teens and extensive outreach programs to the communities that we serve. Today we serve over 1,000 youth in these programs which include enrichment and life skills.

In addition we are a Health & Fitness Center with new state-of-the-art equipment and expanding group exercise classes that promote healthy lifestyles for youth, adults, and seniors. As a membership organization, we promote long-term relations as co-owners of and stakeholders in the Buchanan YMCA community. We promote volunteerism to assist with the delivery of life-changing programs, formulate policy, develop new service initiatives, and evaluate existing programs.

History:
The Buchanan YMCA is a branch of the YMCA of San Francisco. The history of Buchanan YMCA began in 1886 as the Japanese YMCA. In 1936, the Buchanan YMCA, a new facility built from funds raised by the Japanese community opened its doors. After WWII, Buchanan YMCA began to serve the broader community of Western Addition, Haight Ashbury, Hayes Valley, and lower Pacific Heights. Buchanan YMCA has existed for the specific purpose of meeting the needs of the community. As those needs changed, so will the Buchanan YMCA.
