The California Academy's mission is to explore, explain, and protect the natural world.
Description:
Since 1853, the California Academy of sciences has dedicated its efforts to research and education about the natural world. It is the oldest scientific institution in the West. The Academy is a natural history museum with a planetarium, natural science exhibits, and since 1923, has the oldest grand municipal aquarium in America. In 2008 the Academy will reopen its doors in Golden Gate Park to a new building, designed by Renzo Piano, and with exceptional "green" features including a green roof.
