Senior Peer Counseling is an innovative program that utilizes volunteers, age 55+ to counsel other seniors in their homes or in group day support settings. Using their own rich life experiences, they are able to bridge gaps in professional care and increase their peers' quality of life.
Description:
After an initial training, Senior Peer Counselors continue to meet in a supportive group once a week for supervision and ongoing in-service training. Topics range from mental health/substance abuse issues, listening skills, as well as talks by representatives from the many senior services available in San Francisco. Volunteers can choose to see 1 to 5 clients in their homes and/or at Family Service Agency's Older Adult Day Support or the new Senior Peer Recovery Center.
History:
Senior Peer Counseling is celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. It is a part of Family Service Agency, which is the oldest secular social service agency in San Francisco, dating to the 1800's.
