Food Runners is a non-profit, volunteer organization dedicated to alleviating hunger in San Francisco.
Description:
Food Runners picks up excess perishable and prepared food from businesses such as restaurants, caterers, bakeries, hospitals, event planners, corporate cafeterias, and hotels and delivers it directly to shelters and neighborhood programs that feed the hungry. Food Runners volunteers use their own vehicles to transport donated excess food. It is estimated that over 160,000 men, women and children go hungry every day in San Francisco. Food Runners picks up and delivers over 10 tons of food per week. Become a Food Runners volunteer today. All you need is a car, an hour, at your convenience and a smile. It's fast. It's easy. It's fun!
History:
Food Runners was founded in 1987 by Mary Risley, owner of Tante Marie's Cooking School. Food Runners began when Mary and her friends began taking the excess food left over following cooking classes to shelters. Mary quickly expanded the donor network to include restaurants, hotels, caterers, grocery stores, Farmer's Markets and more. Today Food Runners boasts over 400 donors, 200 volunteers and 350 recipients. Food Runners is funded by grants and private donations.
