To provide emotional support and crisis intervention to seniors on our 24 hour hotline. Our goal is to reduce the isolation and loneliness which leads to depression and suicide in the elderly population.

Description:
The Friendship Line is a service of the Center for Elderly Suicide Prevention and the Institute on Aging. The only telephone support line of its type in the country, the Friendship Line offers emotional support and crisis intervention to a range of clients both in the Bay Area and nationwide. Being a volunteer telephone counselor on the Friendship Line gives you the chance to help others, learn or improve counseling skills, receive ongoing training and be a part of the Institute on Aging. Visit www.ioaging.org for more information about the Institute and the Center for Elderly Suicide prevention. The Friendship Line is located on Geary Boulevard in San Francisco.

History:
Dr. Patrick Arbore began the Friendship Line in 1974, after learning that senior citizens have the highest rate of suicide of any other age demographic. Patrick's goal is to help alleviate some of the isolation and depression that is common with aging, by providing a space where people can talk about their fears of aging, loss of independence and dying.
