- Creating educational and employment opportunities for black artists and narrowing the digital divide.
- Celebrating the works of African Americans currently producing media and multimedia art.
- Providing creative and training opportunities to artists with disabilities.
Description:
- ORGANIZATIONAL ACTIVITIES
- VOTER REGISTRATION/GET OUT THE VOTE ACTIVITIES
We worked with Agape Outreach Center and the Stop The Violence Coalition through coordinators Mattie Scott. We helped to register and educate young voters; targeting the 18 to 24 age demographic, at a number of events in 2001, 2002, and 2003. Our role was to run a voter registration booth at events, including: the annual Stop the Violence rallies – a series of summer events targeted at decreasing gang violence and increasing youth awareness of the political process taking place in the Western Addition and Civic Center/Tenderloin neighborhoods. In addition to registering voters, and handing out absentee ballot information packages, we were able to help clear up many misconceptions. We learned that many young people failed to register simply because they mistakenly believed they were ineligible due to misdemeanor convictions or juvenile convictions that do not effect their right to vote. In September 2002 set up a booth for voter registration and education at the 150th Anniversary Celebration of Third Baptist Church – a well-attend event held at Civic Center Square across from City Hall. Prior to the 2000 National Election, we performed and spoke at an event at Dome Village, part of the National Homeless Convention – at an out door event across the street from the LA Convention Center where the Democratic National Convention was being held - in an effort to increase voter awareness among the homeless. We participated in similar events at Golden Gate Park with Food Not Bombs in San Francisco in 1997 and 1998. In 1995, we worked with the Bay Area Association of Ecumenical Evangelists and BAPAC (Black Association of Political Activists of California) to increase voter awareness in the African American Community in a series of rallies honoring the 25th anniversary of the Civil Rights movement. We also went door-to-door registering voters and handing out voter information packets in the housing projects of the Western Addition that year. In 1993 and 1994 we worked with the People’s Coalition to increase voter awareness in the Mission District, Western Addition, and Tenderloin through voter rallies and marches that featured speakers and entertainment. We worked with Hospitality House doing outreach to homeless artists in the Tendeloin.

We have produced two local annual events in San Francisco since 1996 and 1997 respectively: the African American Multimedia Conference and the Iconoclast Black History Film Festival also known as the San Francisco Black Independent Film Festival. We work with artists in the African American community including Rappin 4Tay, Hugh EMC, Sick YG, and many others, and have a history of collaborative projects with the African American Historical and Cultural Society, SOWACC, Go Productions, the California Blues Festival, the San Francisco Juneteenth Festival, Agape, 3rd Baptist, Greater Faith Baptist, Creative Arts Charter School, and Cultural Odyssey. Our original projects and programs were formed under the auspices of the fiscal agency of the Center for African American Art and Culture and SOWACC (Supporters of Western Addition Community Center) and included presentation of creative arts workshops and development of video and documentary projects and programs individually and with the African American Historical and Cultural Society that depicted African American art and culture and artists with disabilities in an empowering light.
