Description:

PROGRAMMING

We connect people and organizations with each other, and with resources, services, technical support and community expertise in media, journalism and the arts. Our program areas include:
• Fiscal Sponsorship & Incubation. 18 projects, including magazines, radio programs, journalism Web sites, film festivals, free public art and music

• Education & Convening. Expo for Independent Arts, Journalism Innovations, D.I.Y. Workshops, Symposiums

• Production & Promotion. Four Corners Mural, Community Arts Showcase, Informational Media (calendar, Web site articles/resources)

PURPOSE

Mass media is a mess! Newspapers are in retreat, shout radio and "echo-chamber" pundits degrade discourse, and commercialism crowds out quality, relevance and diversity. We can build something better for communities and democracy. Our purpose is to provide a shared back office for independent media producers, journalists and artists, and to nurture dialogue and networks around their work.

History:
In November of 1999 an Artist, a Journalist and a Media Producer came up with an idea for a nonprofit organization that would empower marginalized art, journalism and media projects.

That idea became Independent Arts & Media, an organization now in its tenth year of helping such projects amplify their message as contributors to democratic discourse.

Since its inception, Indy Arts produced the Expo for Independent Arts ten times, hosted hundreds of Do-It-Yourself workshops for artists, media and culture makers, offered two Journalism Innovation Expos with more to come, and went from being an all volunteer run organization to having a full time Executive Director and two part time staff members.

And, although at times it’s been a bit of a bumpy ride, we are thrilled at the prospect for the next ten years.
