Jamestown Community Center is a grassroots youth organization providing education and recreation services to 8 to 18 year olds and their families in the Mission District. Jamestown is dedicated to mobilizing the resources of families, neighborhood residents and other community members to help young people realize their full potential as responsible and empowered members of society.
Description:
Education Programs
- Brain Soup/Summer Playhouse - after-school art, science, dance, theater, and creative writing classes with an emphasis on developing reading and writing skills for 3rd to 5th graders. Summer Playhouse is the program's summer camp for elementary school youth with a focus on arts education including dance, theater and art, and structured recreation.
- After-School Explorations (ASE)/Summer Voyage - after-school art, dance, cooking, and youth leadership classes for middle school youth. The classes help young people develop leadership skills, learn about their own and others cultures/backgrounds, and work together. Summer Voyage is ASE's summer program that helps youth develop their leadership and decision-making skills through projects designed and implemented by the youth themselves.
- The CUT (Community Uniting Teens) - after-school dance, drama, and paid internships for high school youth.
- One on One Tutoring - neighborhood volunteers and college students matched with youth in 3rd through 12th grades for individual tutoring and mentoring.
- Teaching Apprentices Program (TAP) - on-the-job training and workshops for high-school age youth interested in learning about teaching.
- Youth in Charge - leadership corps that helps Jamestown management with program planning and fundraising, and represents the organization in the community.
Sports Programs
- League Sports - soccer, basketball, baseball and softball teams that compete in city-wide leagues.
- Drop-In Rec Centers - supervised after-school recreation at two local public schools.
Parent Programs
- Convivencia - monthly meetings for parents to organize workshops that address child-rearing issues and to design activities for families throughout the year.
Support Groups
- Treehouse - Treehouse is a mental health program that brings together a group of ten boys to meet every Friday afternoon to discuss issues and concerns in their lives. Outside of the Friday sessions, several Treehouse boys also meet regularly with volunteers for additional guidance and mentoring. Treehouse will be expanded this year to include a second group of boys and possibly a group of girls.
History:
For over 30 years, the Jamestown Community Center has been providing learning opportunities and safe space for youth in the Mission District neighborhood of San Francisco. When Jamestown was threatened with closure in 1989, a group of neighbors kept a portion of the programs going for five years as volunteers. In 1994, the neighbors secured a grant of $50,000 from the City of San Francisco to rejuvenate a full set of programs. In re-designing the programs, the neighbors were committed to maintaining the bond between neighborhood youth and community members. They were also interested in developing a range of programs that would tap into young people's interests, help them identify their strengths and talents, and give them opportunities and resources to excel. In keeping with the neighbors' vision, Jamestown's mission is to mobilize the resources of families, neighborhood residents, and other community members to help young people realize their full potential as empowered and productive members of society. The Board of Directors--composed of parents, residents, community leaders, and young people--reflects this mission and the organization's grassroots foundation. At the same time, the organization has grown and evolved significantly since its "re-birth" in 1994. Today, Jamestown has the capacity to provide 500 eight to eighteen year old young people and their families with a wide array of education and recreation programs.
