The Contemporary Jewish Museum presents contemporary perspectives on culture, history, art, and ideas. Founded in 1984, the Museum has a distinguished history of presenting scholarly and artistic exhibitions and programs that engage and sustain audiences of all ages and backgrounds.
History:
Recognizing the vitality and variety of Jewish art and culture, and its boundless relevance to contemporary American society, the Museum was founded in 1984 to present Jewish perspectives of art, history and culture through innovative programs that reach out to people of all cultural and religious backgrounds. The Museum has been housed in a gallery space off at the Jewish Community Federation building in downtown San Francisco, where it presented more than one hundred exhibitions and programs exploring the Jewish spirit and imagination. In 1989, the Board of Trustees of the Museum initiated a rigorous long-term planning process, concluding with a plan to create a more expansive facility to meet the demands and interests of the community through expanded exhibition opportunities, integrated educational facilities, and an enhanced role in the community. The Museum began formally exploring options and we could not have hoped for a better building opportunity, both physically and conceptually, then when the San Francisco Redevelopment Agency invited the Museum to develop the historic Jessie Street Substation, a 1907 landmark located in the heart of the Yerba Buena arts district. With the significantly larger structure made possible by this site, the Board realized that the Museum could bridge the Jewish and arts communities in ways that would contribute significantly to the city’s cultural landscape and to the recognition of the Jewish spirit of creativity in regional and American life. In July 2006, the Contemporary Jewish Museum broke ground for the construction of its new building. The new museum at 736 Mission St. will open to the public on June 8, 2008.
